Papers related to the Theatre Royal at Norwich, 1816-1844.

The Norwich Circuit Company had theaters at Norwich, Ipswich, Colchester, and other towns in that area. The principal theater was the Theatre Royal at Norwich, which was entirely rebuilt and expanded in 1826 under the leadership of James Smith, manager of the company. Manuscript letters and other papers concerning the activities of the Norwich Circuit Company, particularly the operation of the Theatre Royal at Norwich. The letters, all addressed to Smith, include solicitations of parts from actors and actresses, or from their parents and "friends;" business arrrangements about items needed for the theater; and answers to invitations by Smith to attend performances. Other papers include several prologues and poems; a cast list for an unidentified play; a printed playbill for a production of "She Stoops to Conquer" at the Theatre Chelmsford on July 18, 1816; and a printed broadside, titled "The Stage!!!" containing a letter by Robert Mansel, manager of the Sheffield Theatre, defending the theater against an attack by the Reverend Thomas Best of St. James Church, dated Fargate, Oct. 30, 1818.

Robert Mansel was an English theatrical manager and author. He managed the Theatre Royal in York and Hull, which included theatres in Leeds, Wakefield, Doncaster, and Pontrefact. He was one of the more enterprising managers, arranging for significant alterations at York by a public subscription. He also wrote several books about the theatre, notably A defence of the drama.
